For the recession, they should have a chart just like this to let us know when things are really getting bad. Not all of us are subscribers to The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, How Majors Corporations Are Robbing Us Blind, or Man I wish Robin Hood Was Alive Now. So for those who are not, a chart like this would be perfect to give us just the right amount of fear to allow Big Brother to swoop in and take over. However, as if this chart isn’t perhaps a veiled attempt to knock the gay and lesbian community enough, I propose new colors for the Recession Threat Chart.
Perhaps it could be like
Low
We’re Madoff’ing you but you don’t know it yet.
Guarded
Oh Snap. Jon Stewart has figured it out.
Elevated
Crap, now even a few white people have lost money.
High
HOLY HELL! Stop investing no matter what Warren Buffet says! This baby is going down faster than the Titanic
Severe
It’s so bad, a Black man is President.
Seriously, this thing is out of control. Every time I turn around this many jobs have been slashed, this bailed-out firm is out partying like a rockstar, It’s almost automatic. When I turn on the news, no matter what’s going on all I see are those chaotic scenes from War of the Worlds, or Deep Impact, or whatever Armageddon movie get you off. It’s gotten to the point where I feel sad because my friends who used to have their high and mighty jobs posted on their facebook pages, have silently begun to pull that information off as layoffs become their reality. This is one of if not THE worse recessions since the Great Depression. What’s even more… well depressing is that for black people, we’re already ahead in the game. For us, this is a Depression. Our poverty rates are much higher than those of the majority, and that number isn’t going to get any better as this situation worsens.
What really hurts is how our generation is getting it pretty bad. The invincible ones. The “we want it now” generation. More and more of my friends are graduating college with no jobs, going back to school, graduating, still no jobs. Some of us who had jobs are now out on our backsides. Others didn’t even have the chance to put money into savings yet. Can’t just run home when Mom’s house just got foreclosed on. Those mistakes you made in college that hurt your non-existent at the time credit are really coming back to haunt you now. Reality really sets in while standing in line at a career fair full of companies that either aren’t really hiring, or aren’t real companies. Cutco’s application rates have probably gone sky high since this recession. Self-made millionaire get rich schemes are probably doing better than ever. All of a sudden, people who couldn’t make sound decisions for whatever company they were with before now think they would make great entrepreneurs.
My heart aches when I think about mine and my generations future. We are THE future and we’re suffering a major setback. How will we overcome this? Are was really as smart as we claim we are and will jump into action to develop something that will ensure our survival through this? Pretty much everyone I know is all about “grinding”. That’s what it takes. For the older generations who love to call us lazy, please try again. We will get this ship back on course despite having been passengers on the bottom floor reserved for the low lifes and having to scramble to get to the top to watch it sink. We didn’t hit the glacier, but we will mend the hole. The only thing I ask of my fellow young people is to not repeat the mistakes of those before us. Don’t let greed tempt us into sacrificing our integrity and compassion. Let’s set up the generations coming behind us for success. Remember, we should always want better for our children.
Too bad no one really thought about that for us.
