Is the Speaker of the House Hurting Obama?

nancy-pelosiShe has been seen as America’s own iron lady often time being forced to share the title of most powerful woman in America with Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi is now in the position to become really damaging to the party she has helped bring back to power. With President Obama and those in his Justice Department working overtime to clear the air on the secrets the Bush Administration never wanted Americans to know it is hitting some of the most powerful in his party as well. That includes Nancy Pelsoi and the GOP are not letting up.

For the last two weeks, Speaker Pelsoi has been under fire after she and her party in Congress opened the new Congress bent on showing the nation what had been done when George Bush was President and he had his party in power in Congress. The only problem is that it could have just come back to bite them. President Obama is making good on his promise to run the most transparent administration in American history and released blistering memo’s that government lawyers had written allowing the so called “enhanced” interrogation methods to be used which Pelosi and then-Senator Obama called torture. The memo’s which since they’d been made public have been met with shock and outright rage in some parts of America led powerful senior members of Congress to call for a full investigation into what was done which Obama and many leaders in Washington absent Pelosi want to avoid. In her push to ensure that the techniques as some call them are not used again Pelsoi and House Democrats had intended to use it as a campaign issue. That was until Republican leaders hit back blasting Pelsoi for making it a political issue and not opposing the measures when it counted and they seem to be getting help from the Obama Administration or at least the CIA.

Nancy Pelosi who was in 2002 the House Minority Whip and Ranking Member of the Intelligence Committee got a briefing from the CIA about their work with terrorist that had been captured in the war on terror. That is the end of the agreement on all sides. Pelosi is under fire from the GOP and even the CIA because their story says that at this time she along with Porter Goss, a Republican, who was the Intelligence Committee Chair at the time got information at the CIA believed it was legal to use water boarding in order to get information from suspects and they had used it. Pelosi calls it a lie and says that she was only told that the CIA believed they had the power to use it but wouldn’t or hadn’t at the time. The mess only begins from there. Former Democratic senator Bill Graham who was the chair of his chamber’s intelligence committee sided with Pelsoi despite the fact that the CIA released notes claiming to show that Pelosi had in fact been told of their treatment of prisoners. Regardless of who is right and who is not Pelsoi who has been a star for Democrats has taken a big hit. Liberals in her San Francisco district are enraged that she could have given her okay for this treatment if the CIA is telling the truth. The question for the American people is not if the speaker is being truthful or not but what do we do now?

As Republicans run around happy that they seem to have gotten something to hit the very popular leader with the truth will always set us free. Members of Congress who are briefed on these instances by the CIA and other agencies are not allowed to speak about what they learned with anyone else. When they enter the room they have to swear not reveal what they are told to any other party. To ensure that the person in the meeting doesn’t have quotes or exact information of what is said CIA officers prohibit them, members of Congress, leaders of the US government from taking notes. Their notes become the official record unchallenged. That was not enough for the speaker and she is right to hit back. We can’t be sure what was told to Pelosi as she met with CIA officials however it can’t be accepted fact just because they said so. Fmr. Senator Graham (D-FL) whose reputation for honesty and integrity has been beyond reproach by all on both sides even contradicts the CIA. Graham is widely known as a person who keeps detailed records on what he has done and with who. The CIA said they briefed Graham who was then the Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee four times on this subject but Graham after looking through his records said they lied. He only met with them once and that information was bland and not in agreement with what the CIA and others say they discussed.

The nation should not be too pressed to decide if what Nancy Pelosi and others said was said actually happened. This sounds like a grown up version of she said/he said. The attention of the nation should be on the act that was done. Everything else is a complete distraction.
