Jeremih is Def Jam’s newest rising star. You may not know him by name, but you damn sure know the words to this 21-year old Chicago native’s smash single “Birthday Sex”. And if you were like me last night watching the 2009 BET Awards, Red Carpet pre-show, you saw him perform his official baby-makin’ single, live for the first time. And he did impress, because his vocals sounded exactly how he sounds on the record, but live. Jeremih’s self-titled debut album hits stores Tuesday, June 30th, and everybody wants to know if he’s going to be a one hit wonder or if his cd will be filled with sultry hits like his debut single. Well, you know FreshXpress has the scoop!
OK, I’m going to just jump right in on this one, here’s the track list, and you can check Jeremih’s fresh rating on each song!

The album starts out with Jeremih borrowing a page out of the current forerunner of average crooning & hot beats, The Dream’s, how to manual with “That Body”. It’s a decent song to start the album out with, however it does sound a lot like a Dream,” Love Vs. Money”, left over, as does the majority of this album. He follows that up with the steamy, single “Birthday Sex”, but after that, he lost me. “Runway” might do ok with the ladies, but nothing really special. He gives us a sample of his flowing skills, as he spits a hot verse on “Rain Drops”, which saves the song from being totally lame. “Imma Star” is supposedly going to be the next single to drop. I don’t think this song is really as hot as Jeremih and his producer Mick Shulz think it is, but I hear there is a hott remix in the works, so we’ll just have to keep our ears out for that. “Hatin On Me” has a decent beat, is catchy, and he spits a verse in this one too, but this song and pretty much the whole album, sounds like the rest of the mediocre songs already bombarding our radio airways.
This album was all over the place, revealing that Jeremih is still very young and has an underdeveloped musical vision of where he wants his artistry to go. The vocals on this CD, right along with the material and production, are pretty thin and seem to be lacking expertise. He does have great potential with him being able to sing, write, produce, and play a whole orchestra’s worth of instruments, but this CD leaves a lot to be desired after having such a huge debut single. We’ll just have to wait and see if Jeremih will hit the studio hard and grind until it hurts for his sophomore album, or if he will be another One Hit Wonder!
