Dear Solange

Solange’s new haircut has been all the hype to the point where it was #3 Trending Topic on Twitter. Folks talked about her hair more than they discussed the Iran Elections & Obama’s new healthcare plan. Sad? Definitely. Entertaining? Absolutely. So my letter is to Beyonce’s shadow,  Solange

Dear Solange,

As of last week, I’m a new fan of yours. Yes, I’ve always thought you’ve tried way too hard to be president of the “I’m not Beyoncé” Club. You are indeed too extra at times and your fashion choices are often mad questionable. Sometimes, I wonder if you look in the mirror before you step out the house because you can’t possibly think those banana pants you wore were fierce. And the makeup… Plus, the entire Knowles Clan just don’t curl all the way over for me.

Oh wait. What was my show of support again? Ah yes…
solange

You recently cut off all your hair and mostly, you’ve gotten negative feedback from people. Folks have roasted you endlessly, relentlessly and oft times, hilariously. I even admit that I chuckled when someone said you now looked like Reggie Miller. Ok fine, I cackled loudly. I’m sure Papa Knowles is somewhere brushing his ‘stache and plotting the demise of Twitter for facilitating the roast of his dear Solo.

Even Soulja Boy & Bow Wow had the nerve to make fun of you. Until SouljaBoy stops looking like Spectacular Jr., he can’t clown you. And until Bow Wow can ride the grown folks’ coasters at Six Flags Great America, he needs not roast anybody. Bofa’ them need two “FOOL SADDOWN” fitted caps.
foghorncel
When I first heard you cut your hair, I gave an instant side-eye because I thought you were following in LaLa, Cassie and Pon De Fo’head’s footsteps with that tacky shaved on the sides haircut. I know Foghorn Leghorn is somewhere PISSED at them for swagger jacking. But I saw your picture and said “WHEW!” Well, I’m here to say “Kudos, Solange. Effing Kudos.” I support your new haircut. As a short hair aficionado myself, who has kept my hair short for the last 9 years, I give you the thumbs up. I say everyone should go ultra short as least once in their lifetime. It can be easy to hide behind a busted hairhat, but if you can be cute with no hair to cover that huge forehead or that odd looking ear then you get mad props from me. No offense to those who are hairhat aficionados.

Everyone isn’t Halle Berry but everyone also doesn’t need to have hair down their back either. I think you look decent with the hair. You look identical to your son, Juelz now.

And I’ve taken it upon myself to give you unsolicited advise to ensure that your segzy isn’t compromised now that you have short hair.

  • Get a 100% boar bristle brush – will keep your kitchens in check and your hair neat
  • thewallKeep a standing appointment at SuperCuts every 2 weeks so the back of your neck isn’t looking like Wolverine’s. Your lining shouldn’t be too tight though. You don’t want dudes being envious of your LINING game
  • Rock big earrings always so on those days you aren’t rocking a skirt, folks don’t address you by “Sir”

With these in mind, you can rock your short hair with confidence and fierceness (like I am in that pic. Yes I was feeling myself something se’ous). This new style makes you more interesting to me. Plus, when you clapped back on Twitter at everyone, you earned yourself a new fan. It gave me EVERYTHING!

Yours in new fan-dom,

LuvBucket

P.S. Just promise me you’ll never wear another Technicolor, shiny lycra onesie jumpsuit like this again. Kthxbai!

Post Summary

Folks have roasted you endlessly, relentlessly and oft times, hilariously….but Im a new fan of yours and here’s my show of support.

Stay in the Loop!

Dig this post? There's plenty more where that came from. Here are some other ways to get your FXP fix:

You have to do what makes you happy…but everybody can’t rock a natural. She appears to be one of them. Maybe as she gets used to it, she’ll figure out how to rock it correctly. Maybe a different style or something.

@SW, Oh, and for the record, I have nothing against naturals. I think its great when a woman can rock short hair and look good. I just don’t think its working for her. But I think there is a bigger issue, in the fact that she’s getting clowned so hard. Maybe she should be like her sister and rock the wigs and let them whiten her skin in ads?

@SW, Everyone CAN rock a natural. That’s your NATURAL HAIR!! That’s insane.

@JG*, Everyone CAN rock a natural, you’re right. Everyone can’t ROCK a natural. You can wear whatever you want, everyone just doesn’t look good doing it. not saying she looks bad. Just saying her current look isn’t her best one. She has a cute face, so she’ll be cool.

@JG*, I can’t rock a natural. If I wash my hair and let it air dry, the fro will eclipse the sun. If I cut all my hair off like Solange, I’d look like a boy…Like Solange. LOL.

Solange is always gonna have a problem because of big sis B, and that’s gotta be a mindtrip within itself. She’s doing her, so eff it. She dope regardless.

@Ed The Sports Fan, Being Beyonce’s little sister is like being Barack Obama’s little brother, lol. She’ll never measure up. I’ve only seen that pic above. I’ve got respect for her for doing it. Like I said, B lets people whiten her skin in pics, so thats what should really be a trending topic on Twitter.

When this pic was released to the internets, my first thought was “Ok. And?”

Then I watched it become a saga that cluttered my Twitter and Facebook feeds allll daaaaay loooong. It literally made my head hurt. And then when Solange finally logged on and tried to speak her piece and I watched people tear her to shred for what she did with her hair??? Who gives a flying [insert expletive here]?

For the record, I don’t think it looks that bad. Will definitely look better once she learns how to rock it. But in the end, if she likes it I love it.

And iDied at “Pon de Fohead!” Bwhaha!

Ok i’m bringing this here:
its a shame black women in America can’t wear their hair natural with out ignorant people trying to clown them, Nothing is wrong with natural hairstyles ladies

I love it! I don’t know anyone who was born with a Lacefront wig flowing down their backs; so the fact that you can believe that not everyone can rock natural hair confuses me. Women often hide behind hair b/c society has brainwashed the public into believing the longer the straighter the better. I personally have rocked the same “do” and it takes a lot of courage to do so. I am very sure a lot of women could and would not do the same. Kudos to S.

@Justine N. Jackson, When I say “not everyone can rock the natural”, I’m saying not everyone looks good wearing that style of hair. Same way not everyone looks good wearing lacefront wigs. Thats all.

This hair thing pisses me off so bad. I’ve had a perm as far back as I could remember. I went natural for 10 months but just didn’t know what I was doing. But people were SO RUDE. It truly showed me how ignorant and brainwashed people were. I thought I looked cute, but I wanted to cry everyday due to what people said to me. Not to mention, just because I had curly hair all of a sudden I wasn’t the same me. People just assumed I wanted black soap and incense. Damn shame. I can’t wait until Chris Rock’s documentary comes out on Good Hair. Then all these men who have these crazy thoughts about OUR hair will see that all those stars they adore, that ish comes off at night!

Sorry…. got upset. LOL

Luvvie, good post! Haha and do the damn thing Solange! The Big Chop is hard to do, but I’m glad you did it! You did it for YOU!

@JG*, The fact that that happened to you is sooooo wack. Seriously. I understand the notion that every hair style isn’t for everybody. (All men can’t rock the baldy.) However, placing biases on women who choose to rock the natural is unacceptable.

I’m just being honest here. I don’t like it. I’m not against natural hair styles, but one has to have hair in order to style it. I’m American not African, and I feel like it’s all too often that “crunchy granola” black folks try extra hard to prove their ethnocentrism by doing something silly like this.

Natural. Relaxed. Short. Long. Red from KoolAid. BlondeGold with highlights. Jet Black to match the moonlight. Why all so negative? The only thing that I loathe more than the stereotypes that come along with certain hairstyles (long = fake, european, sell-out, brainwashed; short = pro-black, crunchy granola, rebel or Xx = whateverthefruck) are the persons who jump on the ignant train and support them. I was born with short natural hair and was fabulous. I now have longer chemically treated hair and am fabulous. I was born black, am living black and will die a black woman fully secure in my blackness regardless of my hair or lack of it. Sweet Jesus, save us all from the division that hair brings. LOL. For the record, I think her hairstyle brings great attention to her gorgeous eyes…but that’s just me.

@Ms. Jackson, 1st of all I think we were ALL born with “short natural hair” as you put it. So that really means nothing. 2ndly I think you all know what I mean when I refer to “crunchy granola” black people, as if Solange hasn’t been trying SO hard to be seen as the musical and stylistic antithesis of her older sister. Everyone in their youth searches for a place where they find that they fit in. Many others try so hard NOT to fit it, that all they end up achieving is fitting in somewhere else. It’s a byproduct of our corporate consumer culture. Furthermore, and not to deny anyones so-called “individuality,” but stereotypes come from someplace. 3rdly, although I’m sure you won’t admit to this, I don’t think anyone would be snapping at me if we were all talking about Sinead O’Connor or somebody white being bald headed.

Reply

22 Ms. Jackson July 31, 2009 at 11:36 am

@Cole B., I don’t think we would even be having this conversation if it was somebody white being bald headed? Matter of fact, I KNOW we wouldn’t as Sinead O’Connor does not stimulate the pulse of Young Black America c) TheFreshXpress. I pulled a couple quotes from other folks as well so please don’t victimize yourself. Stereotypes do come from everywhere, but why should we continue to further them with generalizations and comments such as “crunchy granola” or “fake”? Allow me to re-introduce my point: Long hair doesn’t mean you’re anti-black/brainwashed etc, Short hair doesn’t mean you’re gay Natural Hair (be it short or long) doesn’t mean crunchy granola, trying to be different, xyz. It means you either need to get a pony-tail holder for hot days, a hat for the winter or some awesome hair products for the everpresent humidity. Seriously. I really wish people wouldn’t make it something it’s not. Point. Blank. Period.

@Ms. Jackson, The short natural has indeed been rocked by ALL of hence…which supports my idea that everyone CAN rock it, as they have done it before. Thanks for proving my point.

When I saw Solange’s new do, I didn’t think anything different of it. She’s just another woman on the long list of women who choose to show their style and individuality in a different manner. Then like everyone else said, Twitter and Facebook blew up with comments regarding it. For one, I commend Solange and countless others who choose NOT to follow the stereotypes and run to the nearest Chinese hair store for an 18″ yaky. Now, I’m not downing those sistas either becuase they choose what they want to do with their hair. But the question that I posed on Twitter was “How would everyone feel if it was revealed that Solange had a disease like cancer or something and lost her hair”? Would their opinions change then? We must put it into context that for many women, their short hair was not of a fault of their own. Some lost it for various reasons and it is best just to keep it short. They walk around like this everyday to work, school, events, etc. Yes, Solange is living in the shadows of Beyonce and will get much criticism because she’s not flashy as her. However, I choose to look at the other qualities that she possesses such as doing an excellent job raising one of the cutest kids that I have ever seen. Maybe she will rock it for three more weeks or maybe next week we will see her with an 18″ yacky. Who knows. Let her live.

@JG I feel ya, I’m going thru some of what u went thru right now, but F what ppl think. It’s my hair and I wear it the way I want !
Jeez I never heard the term crunchy granola, lol. Hey every black woman in America with the exception of those born with “good hair” has crunchy granola. Why is it such a big deal if she wants to wear her hair that way?

I think she’s BEYOND FLY for doin’ it. Not everyone can pull it off, but she’s makin’ it work. I’m not on Twitter, so I haven’t seen the backlash, but people are always gonna have something to say. Doesn’t matter, though; she’s makin’ it work, and after a while of rockin’ it, it’ll be even more fly.

I must say that I definitely agree. She should be able to freely express herself without society always branding her as her sister’s shadow. I think she is wonderful and she had every right to snap back on her haters the way she did. Now only if her sister could stop swagga jacking and have half of the originality, then the world would be making some progress. Lol

I like her haircut. Fuck everybody else’s opinion. But seriously, other than Solo’s attitude, I like how she stays original, and true to her own style. Not too many people do that. Kudos girlie, and thanks for publicly rocking the natural ‘do. I have had one too many black mofos try to roast me on my 3C evil curls because I refuse to go the relaxer route.
