It seems as if yet another rapper will make the inside of a jail cell his home for a few months. Hot on the heels of T.I. being incarcerated for a year (he is set to be released March 26, 2010), mega rap star Lil Wayne has pleaded guilty to attempted weapons possession charges today.
According to Allhiphop.com :
the rapper is expected to receive a maximum sentence of one year in jail, although he is expected to serve around eight months.
The rapper had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, but changed the plea to avoid a trial that was due to start January 20 and could have resulted in at least 3 ½ years in prison. (Source)
Update: The guilty plea stems from a 2007 New York incident in which police stopped the rapper’s tour bus and found a .40 caliber handgun during a subsequent search. According to reports, a minuscule portion of Wayne’s DNA was found on the gun leading authorities to believe that it was in fact his and not his manager’s (who publicly admitted to owning the gun on Wayne’s VH1 Behind the Music).
So the underlying questions that need to be asked are: How will the rap game be changed once the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” begins serving his jail sentence? Are you happy that society is now holding entertainers accountable for their actions?

Personally I wouldn’t mind if a black hole of irrelevance swallowed Lil Wayne alive, but this is MESSED up. I don’t get it. What is attempted weapons possession? Sounds like something made up just to put someone in jail. Even celebrities aren’t safe from the statistic: another black man, another felony. And for what? Ugh. ****FREE T.I.*****
This is going to be a circus. I got $5 on it that Weezy releases prison tracks, and wins all of the awards the year that he’s incarcerated.
@JG*, I’m with you JG, the BET Awards being the main culprit.
I’m confused as to why he was allowed to plead guilty. Did anyone notice how his friend admitted that the gun was his and not Wayne’s on Behind the Music last month?
@Jessica Lynn Barton,
Jessica,
somehow the prosecutor’s office found a minuscule portion of Wayne’s DNA on the gun and that lead them to conclude that he knew that the gun was on the tour bus and he had handled it at some point thus putting him in violation of his parole.
@Jenifer, Thanx for the clarification!
How will the rap game be changed once the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” begins serving his jail sentence? It won’t. It will just open the floodgates for more rubbish rappers.
Are you happy that society is now holding entertainers accountable for their actions? Nah. These entertainers have high priced Attorneys to either get them off or serve lesser sentences than the average individual/criminal.
Lil Wayne’s lawyers suck! All they had to do was prove that he could’ve had his hands on the gun prior to it being on the bus (Reasonable doubt)
But then again, this could be a media stunt on his part. Why plead guilty when you have someone ELSE admitting that it was their’s (Reasonable doubt). ANYWAY Lil Wayne can now prove himself by going to jail, have 8 months to not write (since he supposedly freestyles his “music”), and come back with an album that’s set to release the day he is set to be released … maybe a week later.
His going to jail won’t make a significant difference. Haven’t Black artist ALWAYS been held accountable for their actions & the actions of those around them??????
now lil wayne can have all the gay sex he wont! sound more like sexual tourism to me.
