I Used to Love H.E.R….

I had to bring it back to my hometown for this Throwback Thursday with Common’s I Used To Love H.E.R. – which was off Common’s Resurrection album and most widely known as Common’s ode to hip hop. As probably one of the greatest hip hop songs ever made, this song is an extended metaphor – using a woman to represent hip hop throughout the song with H.E.R. meaning Hip Hop in its Essence is Real. Even though I Used to Love H.E.R. is considered one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time many forgot or didn’t know that this song also added fuel to the fire that was the East Coast-West Coast rivalry. In Common speaking on the ills of hip hop as Gangsta Rap was becoming widely popular with artists like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube – these lyrics which spoke of a more afrocentric and traditional approach offended those types of artists. A growing beef would ensue between Common, Ice Cube and Westside Connection until it was eventually squashed.

The music video which was shot in August of 1994 shows clips of Chicago’s south side and features a woman who is deemed hip hop. As Common raps about her progression she eventually becomes like gangster rap when she is seen with two other rough-looking woman as a way to show the rise of gangster rap. Enjoy your Throwback Thursday video…

One of my favorite songs. But I think I liked “One Day It’ll All Make Sense” better than “Resurrection”.
