Stalker or No?

in Love & War

stalkingEver since “stalking” became an offical crime, I’ve been confused about where the line exactly is,  kinda like sexual harrassment.  I’ve been taught that S.H. is perception over intention and I have to guess it’s about the same for stalking.  I mean, I’m sure the cops don’t have to find someone in your bushes fondly your stolen underwear to determine that someone is a stalker.  However, I am curious about where the line is drawn between persistance and stalking.  There are plenty of married couples that would have never been together if the guy gave up when the woman didn’t show interest right away.  It’s all perception.  The difference between a lawsuit and getting nipple shots sent to my blackberry is the interest the woman has in me.  So I’d have to say it’s the same thing for (non-extreme) stalking.  My best example is love songs.  We all know about “Every Breath You Take” being the offical stalker anthem.  However, there are a slew of great love songs that when heard now bring out thoughts of stalking.

“Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” – Frankie Valli – The title says it all.

“And I’m Telling You” – Jennifer Holliday – I quote: “Tear down the mountains, Yell, scream and shout. You can say what you want, I’m not walkin’ out. Stop all the rivers, Push, strike, and kill. I’m not gonna leave you, There’s no way I will.” Yeah…to quote another song: “Someone please dial 9-1-1.

“Whereever You Go” – Richard Marx – It doesn’t help that he uses “insane” and “crazy” in the lyrics.

“Private Eyes” – Hall and Oates“They see your ev-ery move” This could challenge the offical stalker theme.

“Can’t Stand Losing You” – The Police – What’s up Sting?  Is something going on we should know about? If her girlfriends have told you and her brother wants to beat you up…it’s time to let go.

“Just My Imaginiation” – The Temptations - This guy is at the point of getting married and having a family…despite not even having talked to the girl he is watching everyday.  That may make for an akward introduction.

So this is what I want to know.  Ladies, what is crossing the line into stalker territory? Do you determine it by your interest or by the actions of the person (panty stealing aside)? How much do you consider sweet and when does it become scary?

It does depend on interest. You know for a while I could be playing hard to get, but when I’m like.. “No dude.. seriously… stop… I’m good. I have a boyfriend….I’m married, I’m gay, whatever… stop!” and he continues, Houston We Have A Problem.

Mariah Carey has the best stalker anthems.
“Always Be My Baby”

“Boy don’t you know you can’t escape me
Oh darling cause you’ll always be my baby”
“…No way you’re never gonna shake me
ooh darling cause you’ll always be my baby”

That’s a problem.
