Okay, a white, 30-something Irish bloke probably isn’t the exact target market for a black woman who purveys a blend of soulless, poptastic R&B and while, in fairness, some of her songs are infuriatingly catchy, let’s get real — we’re not exactly talking about Ella Fitzgerald here.
But she seems like a pleasant enough modern pop creation who is careful not to say anything that would alienate her fanbase.
So, you would think that after her success at the Grammys, she is an inspiration to black women. But you would be wrong. And quite possibly a racist as well.
Beyonce had blonde hair at the awards and this prompted black commentator Teshima Walker of National Public Radio to fume: “I know that blonde hair is associated with white women and beauty. I saw how men respond to girls and women with golden hair … But now I think maybe black stars should help African-American women release the hold that blonde hair has had on us.”
Hmmm….Definite food for thought. I would say that the clean sweep by Taylor Swift AND Beyonce at the Grammy’s indicates that the music industry, and pop culture consuming society, is in trouble. Period. And for an “Irish bloke” he seems to have hit the nail on the head. He’s not saying anything most of the black intelligentsia in these blog streets hasn’t been saying for years now. Welcome to the party, Ian!
Her R&B is soulless because she herself cannot figure out, like Mariah these days, which part of the racial spectrum she wants to pander to. Ella Fitzgerald, at least not to me, wasn’t trying to pander to a soul. She brought it. Back then, if you were of any other race listening to “Negro” music, it was what it was. You either were down or you weren’t. Because back then, you could be openly for or against anything black. Black artists didn’t have to worry about pandering. They were singing, and if someone of another race wanted to take a listen, it was what it was. I already talked about this in a post yesterday. Looking at black music from 10 to 20 years ago, to today, you see a big difference. Black artists no longer want to seem “too black” because the money won’t be there if they do. They are not content with getting money from a small demographic. They want it all. It’s not like they can’t put out something akin to “Weak” by SWV and say “eff it.” They just won’t because they are afraid of the response. Hence, the music became soulless because only half of their soul is in it.
This is not to say that white people cannot handle good R&B, but the generation of kids coming up these days, black and white, don’t know how to handle “soul” because most of them don’t have it. Years of commercialism, materialism, idiocy and all that other bullshit will do that to you. But I digress….
Do I think Beyonce is a race traitor? I don’t know. That would depend on whether or not she actually feels she is black or anything of the sort. Do I think that she is a major, if not the GREATEST, purveyor of bullshyt Eurocentric beauty standards and fuckery to black women and girls? You damned skippy. That in and of itself makes her a race traitor to some. For me, it definitely makes her a bit greedy and a bit irresponsible.
I’m not surprised that Mr. O’Doherty said something. If you go through the comments on blogs that pander to a mostly white audience (Perez Hilton, Just Jared, DListed, et al), you’re going to see that the younger white audience is tired of her and her “beauty standards.” I see complaints about her weave, complaints about her usurping the “saint” Lady Gaga (or trying to be her). Is it any surprise that Taylor’s wins made more press?
Beyonce has always made most of her fanbase love and envy her, and because of that conundrum, she is loved and hated. Beyonce has made big money making black women (and men) wish they could be like her or have her. For the longest time, Beyonce was the rule that black women should strive to become. She was the ideal that black women needed to fit. She did nothing to temper that. She made beaucoup bucks off of it. The jury is still out for me. Maybe you guys’ thoughts could help me make my mind up.
Is Beyonce a race traitor?

WOW how tight would it be if Beyonce and Akeys went Natural and did a song with India Arie… and held down all little black girls all over the US and showed them how to take pride in who they are… Its just a dream but it would be tight…
Alicia Keys is natural…
Would Beyonce be as popular if she went “natural”?
I also think it would be great if both Bey and AKeys would stop wearing the weave 24/7.
Black girls need to see them both without any weave from time to time.
Also, if black men would stop making such a big deal about “non-black” hair that would help young black girls.
Let’s be real this whole weave epidemic in the Black community was in direct response to Black men’s obsessions with “European” straight hair.
We Black women have all had a black man tell us he wished our hair was long/straight/natural like a white girl.
I have to respectfully disagree here. I thought A. Keys was natural? Why are so many black women so utterly obsessed with the hair of other black women??
I thought the same thing until I saw:
http://mediatakeout.com/2010/35161-all_natural_rb_singer_alicia_keys_takes_pics_without_her_weave__and_wearing_very_little_makeup.html
Weaves, extentions and lace fronts are all the rave in the celeb world.
Everybody uses them.
She is still natural… She just wears weave..
Which I don’t see the problem.
But also, I still don’t think she’s an overboard weave-wearer. Pictures of her as a teen show that the girl has a huge head of hair…
Regardless… I don’t see why she or any other entertainer needs to be the spokespeople for life. We need to start learning how to think for ourselves.
I think she does more to keep Black women single with he sister-girl anthems like single ladies/ irreplaceable etc then help transmit the white beauty standard. I mean chicks would be wearing lace front wigs with or without Beyonce right? I live in Korea and Beyonce is one of the few global acts in the world right now so just like Michael Jackson she doesn’t really belong to Black people anymore.
Why do we always need someone to “be on our side”? It’s like black people in America live for the approval of others.
I love this article (particularly the use of the word f*ckery ha!). I agree that Beyonce is not a good standard for black women. I do like some of her music, but I have never personally considered her any standard of beauty that I’d try to live up to. One thing I did always find amusing os that the same black men who”cant stand weave” and “prefer an woman au natural” are obsessed with her- she isn’t either of those things and never has been. But selah, people like what they like- her superficiality does look good on her (lol).
PS do forgive my horrible grammar in this post lol
So a black artist who makes mainstream music is a “race traitor?” Beyonce makes pop music with an R&B voice. It’s not meant to be deep. It’s not meant to be soulful. It’s not supposed to hold the “secrets of life.” It’s supposed to be upbeat and catchy (check and check.) And no, I’m not a Beyonce stan who defends her every onesie and lacefront choice. Is there something to admire in her? Sure. She took her talent and used it to build a lucrative brand that allows her to make money at things she’s not even good at (i.e. acting). As far as a standard of beauty, it’s rare that black women’s curves are appreciated. Bey ain’t Mo’Nique but she’s no waif either, so in that way, I think that she has had some positive impact. I think it’s unfair that in order to be “down for the cause” you have to be India.Arie (who’s music I also love by the way). Bey has chosen the pop/mainstream lane, doing so doesn’t make her any less “black” in my eyes.
Bravo girl! Exactly… Like someone said above.. we don’t always need someone “on our side” sheesh.
I’m not really sure Beyonce asked to be THE IDEAL standard for black women across the board, as much as the entire global market is making her that. I think Beyonce is who she is and is only trying to fulfill that. I think that there may have been times where she, just like many other Artist and Actors (whether Black or White), are faced with that choice of choosing the contract where they must sell their soul or move on and do what is right (for them as moral people). And I think her career has been pretty consistent enough for us to witness that she may be choosing the latter time and time again.
The references to hair and all that crap, is a little petty to me. I mean seriously Teshima, haven’t we seen Beyonce with blonde, black, chocolate AND red hair?? I think that as a glamourous and stylish woman in the public eye she falls victim to the same exact thing all glamorous and stylish woman do. ACCESSORIZING. I mean “C’mon Son”.
The problem that OUR PEOPLE have, is that we are always nit picking at what OUR people do, when they stray too far away from that “BLACK IDEAL IMAGE”. But question, what exactly is that Black Ideal Image? what we are now doing to ourselves is the same thing they did to us many years ago — called us “Colored” because we are of many beautiful shades.
So, because the little yellow girl from Texas, with the “Cajun” background likes to wear blonde weaves, she must be crucified and questioned about her race pandering. I mean for God sakes, the woman Idolized her very dark skinned father before she met her prince charming who is just a few shades lighter than he is. While our PRECIOUS HALF BREED HAILEY, is keeping that trademark going with pretty boy over there.
The one thing I can agree with is YES, our music for today’s generation does need HELP. but again, I think that from “Bills, Bills, Bills” where a 15 year old B. sang with just as much SOUL as she does on “Sweet Dreams” hmmmmm…kinda sounds the same to me. Yeah, she kinda stuck to the formula.
I will also say that this planet called “Hollywood” is very mixed in their perception of what a “black person”. I have come to realize that this is just how screwed up America is. Other society’s, cultures and nations don’t have to deal with this crap as much as this country is fixated on it. I thank God for Film/Screen writing such as John Singleton, Spike Lee and now Tyler.
As a very content DARK skinned, West Indian Fly, gorgeous, fashionista from BROOOKKKLLYYN the image of Beyonce does not define me as a black woman, at all. I will never stop saying that she is beautiful, and talented Blonde Hair and all.
I love Beyonce, but I have to admit she straddles the fence…. She does the whole weave thing and boldly….last I saw her, it was all the way down her back. She has found black love, but in all honesty would she have if she were regular and couldn’t flawlessly maintain her diva??? Jay z, Mr Big Pimping himself… swore to never be with one woman. What changed that??? She writes songs either to one degree or another.. she is either the independant bootylicious diva who pays her own bills and rings the alarm, or the hopless romantic ,crazy in love, trapped in the halo of her lover… I also found it typical that she wrote single ladies after she was involved with Jay for seven years or so… Its not like he rushed to put a ring on it… I do find that to be a serious oxymoron. I feel like if you aspire to be an everyday Beyonce you will come under fire from your peers, male and female…. too provacative, fake hair, boojie or a man hater… yet she is on a pedestal. Black men would take her in a minute even in her undeniable superficial state….
1) Beyonce did not write Single Ladies.. maybe a line or two (like Uh oh, oh… uh oh oh… etc) But that wasn’t her.
2) Even if it was, she doesn’t *have* to write about her life alone.
3) She can also write songs across the board because if she only wrote about one thing, she’d be boring. Plus women are not one monolithic group. Even I, a woman that considers herself a lady, sometimes wants to drop down low and sweep the floor with it. Likewise, I know what it’s like to be Crazy in Love & Independent.
4) Let’s face it.. She’s rich. Men would take her over a chick that looked and acted just like her in a hot second because she’s rich. Men would line up for a chance at Oprah and she’s not all that “drop dead gorgeous.”
Sorry for the list… I have to list things out to make them make sense to me. LOL
This type of mentality pisses me off. People give too much power to celebrities. Beyonce ia not a race traitor. Beyonce is a continuation of Whitney Houston’s legacy of being the black pop princess. Whitney is the prototype, Bey is proof that it can be done if you always remember that crack is wack. 20 years ago, the music industry was still trying tp acknowledge hip hop as a viable music genre. Some of us were already alive when Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff won the first rap grammy. Some of ua may have forgotten because it happened so long ago, but there was a time when MTV played only “white music” and BET was actually relevant to black entertainment. The white community wasn’t even checkin for MJ until Thriller dropped. At that point, there was white music and black music and white musician who stole black music and made money and black music that got caught up in the crossfire trying to have industry success. Bey’s music is influenced by R&B, but she is clearly a pop star. Taylor Swift’s music is influenced by country music, but she is a pop star (Taylor is clearly no Pasty Cline).
Beyonce is married to Jay Z. So she has blonde hair, so do I. AND my hair is natural. Bey is one of few black women who have had ultimate success in pop music – and pop isn’t synonymous with white, just like R&B isn’t synonymous with black. We gotta stop this mentality that sees the black experience as a homogeneous entity. Not all black people can dance, not all black people sing with depth. There are Japanese kids who can break dance better than a lot of black people. And country music is soul music that predominately embraced by white people. Is Ray Charles a race traitor because he started his career performing country music? Is Darius Rucker a race traitor because he has and all white band called Hootie and the Blowfish and is only the second black guy to make moves in country music? No and no.
I don’t think it’s fair that we use the term “race traitor” so loosely. Even if Bey was a race traitor, her being a race traitor doesn’t have as much weight as a politician or someone who has legitimate power and influence over our experiences living in America. And no, I also don’t think Jay is illuminati. He’s famous to mainstream America cuz he’s married to Bey. Or else he’d be another rapper.
And before I go, I need to say that I stan for Jill Scott and Beyonce. I stan for Bey because she stans for Jilly from Philly (Beyonce Experience- Bey incorporates ‘ He Loves Me’ in her performance of ‘Deja Vu’). Hollaaah.
It aint just about “black music”, its about black musicians finally bein acknowledged for whatever music we pursue, no matter what genre. I think more black people should listen to jazz and rock music and reggae.
FYI- the parental unit of hip hop is reggae and dancehall music. Marley Marl brought it up from JA (bullet bullet fi alla dem west indian massive).
Ahh A pure example of how we want someone to look and sound and then tell them that their music sucks adding in other variables that in my honest opinion don’t make any bit of sense!!!! Why are we even discussing Beyonce, she’s an artist who makes music, dances and like everyone else, likes to wear different clothes and I think wants a regular life without the paparrazzi present (who knows?)
First of all, alot of celebrities don’t like being judged, just like we wouldn’t like it (plain & simple) but the human interaction regards it, and well, THAT’s LIFE. As far as I’m concerned Beyonce is just an artist who (In my honest opinion) puts in the time to create really good music and a good stage presence, overall I think she’s a great entertainer, she’s definitely on my list. With that being said, we miss the fact that she is just a human doing what she loves to do (if I’m not mistaken). I think she’s evolved from one album to the next and she’s done a great job. The issue with celebrity worship is that its personal opinion coupled with constant hearsay & gossip which may be false. It’s gotten to a point where these things may be used against them in court. It’s sad, but true. Beyonce has blonde hair, so what, it looks good on her, and she’s had some kind of light colored hair for a long period of time, now I’m not gonna blow a racial grievance just because she does something to her hair!!!, and if I’m not mistaken Lady Gaga JUST GOT HERE, and she’s a good artist (who I’m not a fan of). I think that Beyonce is a victim to public opinions such as these, just like Michael Jackson (R.I.P.) and Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, etc. We can agree that in order to really know someone you’d have to meet them or befriend them and then judge them on the “Content of their character.” But as far as I’m concerned, Music is music, and I’m a fan of good music and I THINK that Beyonce is good music and an A+ entertainer.
i think that B has completely forgotten who she was and it bothers the American black population
Blacks feel betrayed and belittled, forgotten forsaken, but mostly insulted, the place ,
beyonce are u ashamed of be a Black woman? an the answer, is yes!!
Luckily there’s still black woman who raise the level and ARE PROUD TO BE BLACK !!!
