Reality TV Overload: My Saving Grace Is Glee

I’m a recovering reality TV show addict. I admit it. I once was addicted to reality TV shows. I even admit that I still watch some of this foolishness. I’m now having a reality TV show overload and need some scripted comedies and dramas in my life.

It all started with MTV’s Real World, where I dreamed of being one of the housemates. Then came Road Rules and the Real World/Road Rules Challenges. I started watching American Idol at the end of the first season. It combined my two loves: reality TV and music. Season 2 captured me: I rooted for Ruben Studdard and even voted. Season 3 really had me addicted: Jennifer Hudson was my pick and I once voted 63 times for her!

After Real World and American Idol, came: Surreal House, Strange Love, Flava of Love 1, 2 &3, I love New York, Real Chance at Love, For the Love of Ray J. And now I found myself watching Ray J and Brandy’s “Family Business”, Basketball Wives, Celebrity Fit Club, Biggest Loser (I even went to the audition for that!) and one of my favorites is the Kardashians. That’s way too much reality TV and I didn’t even come close to naming them all. Don’t forget Survivor and do you remember the show Fear Factor? I bet I left somebody’s favorite out, like the Bachelor. Remember Monica Lewinsky used to host a dating reality show?

If your head hurts just from thinking about them, those are the signs. The signs of what you ask? The signs of Reality TV overload. I yearn for scripted shows again. Remember the days of Martin, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the Cosby Show, Friends, Fraiser, A Different World, Sienfield and my favorite ER? The days of scripted shows, I miss those days. I yearn for scripted shows again.

I love watching Glee, I guess you could call me a “Gleek”. I recently start watching Grey’s Anatomy and I really do hope BET is serious about bringing back “The Game”. If you like American Idol but are like me and experiencing Reality TV overload, I recommend Glee. It has great singing and even dancing. It’s a scripted show about the life and times of a high school glee club. Doesn’t sound that interesting but it really is. Much better than American Idol currently because we all know that Crystal Bowersox is going to win Idol. We never know what is going to happen to the characters of Glee.

I really hope you start watching Glee because I want to write updates on Mr. Schuester and Sue Sylvester’s feud. The romance or currently lack of romance between Rachel and Finn. What about Puck cutting his Mohawk off and trying to date the fat black cheerleader (Mercedes Jones) to gain popularity?

Glee has saved me from Reality TV overload, but I still find myself watching a slew of reality television. I can’t help myself! What are some of your favorite scripted and reality TV shows? Are you a fan of Glee? Let’s discuss!

Man you really are a reality show crackhead. I got off watching the MTV reality stuff, when they started just having pretty people on the show. In the beginning the people seemed to be real and now I think most of the people are fake and overact on the shows. There is nothing to see but petty arguments, sex and alcohol abuse. The first real worlds and road rules kept in real. American Idol has slowly gotten worse with mediocre singers winning. I only watch the tryout and Hollywood week before I stop watching for the rest of the season. VH1 is all over the place but I have cracked up watching how crazy the shows are. Then there is the only one I will actually watch, The Kardashians, I crack up at how they have gained celebrity status from a sex tape. Khloe is my girl love her. Everyone is on Glee, I guess I need to check out an episode.

Peace, Love and Chocolate

I have a thing for reality t.v as well including: Bridezilla, Kim and Khole take over Miami, the Kardashians, all of the Real Housewives, Tabitha Takes over, Project Runway, 9 by design, say yes to the dress, girl meets gown, David Tutera, Celebrity Apprentice, platinum weddings, Lisaraye the Real McCoy, The T.O Show, Ray J and Brandy Family business,What Chili Wants, Basketball Wives, Tough Love for Couples, I just started watching Bad Girls Club and the list goes on and on. Its quite bad and I hope to end it one day but sometimes there's nothing to watch and these shows are on ALL the time.

As for scripted: Law and Order, Girlfriends, Seinfeld, Sex and the City, there's more but they're mostly reruns and after a while I need something new.

Glee is my everything right now lol. I'm such a Gleek nd I don't think I will be able to handle another break for the next season. Its such a refreshing break from the crap they show on TV now that i don't see why people haven't at least watched one episode yet. I definitely recommend.

Yes Tiffany, I am a Reality TV crackhead but I'm recovering or should I tell you crack is wack? I don't know but Glee is helping me, I didn't even watch American Idol yesterday.

I watched MTV's Real World before the beautiful people too. Boston is my favorite season although I have to admit Las Vegas with the beautiful people was pretty awesome!

Naturally_Sexy, I don't know how I will handle another break from Glee either. It might send me back on a binge of reality tv…hopefully not. I'm fragile! lol

I am so happy I had a job during that Glee break because if I was in college, just taking classes with all that idle time, I would have went crazy. I immerse myself in series and sitcoms all the time because I REFUSE to watch the reality shows (sidenote confession: i did get caught up on Tool Academy once lol). Desperate Housewives, LOST, Law and Order (SVU not CI lol) and any other good ones I can get my hands on :)

Reality shows reached its height with the first season of the Real World. I missed the first season of road rules. Either way it went downhill after that for me and I was quickly over the obsession!
