On Tuesday, December 28, 16 year old Phylicia Barnes was last seen wearing a navy pea coat with a hood, blue jeans, a turquoise shirt and white slippers around the Reisterstown Square Apartments in the 6500 block of Eberle Drive in Pikesville, MD.
Today is January 5th, and over a week later, the Baltimore police are JUST NOW suspecting foul play and/or homicide. There have been candle light vigils held in both Baltimore and in her home town in North Carolina. Phylicia Barnes has no history of running away or criminal activity. She is a honor student at a prestigious private school in Monroe, NC.
I can’t count the number of times when nationwide alerts were broadcast by CNN, FOX, & MSNBC because of a missing child, but it just so happens those missing children weren’t black. Why is there a such a disparity when it comes to young black girls? Has there been even one national news outlet to interview the Barnes family?
Why is it now, a week later, that authorities have decided to label this “foul play” and just now seeking national assistance? These are questions that’ll probably never get answered from authorities, because as you know, even though we’re supposedly living in a post racial society, distinct color lines still exist.
I hope for the sake of the Barnes family that Phylicia is found without any type of physical harm. I’m hoping it’s just a case of a teenager upset with her parents and have ran away to a friend’s house. I hope that eventually the life of a black child garners the same attention as that of a white child. Anyone with information on Phylicia Barnes’ whereabouts are asked to call the Baltimore City Police Department.

I can name cases where it takes awhile for national media attention to focus in on a caucasion child missing. I can also name cases where national media attention is all over an african american child missing. You want fairness then quit posting incorrect “racism” ideas. The whole last 1 1/2 hour has been the Tucson shooting. Sure, big news. A tragedy. But the people who were wounded were wounded and the people who were killed are dead. Condolences to them all and prayers for the surviving families. AND the shooter is in custody. No searching or manhunt needed for the killer. They’ve talked to tons of folk. General concensus…he was crazy. The little 9/11 born girl who was killed…again a tragedy. Heart wrenching. But she’s gone. Give the family some privacy. Let them grieve. There’s no bringing her back. There’s no potential that SHE may still be alive. Time IS NOT of the essence. The South Winter storm has been the number 2 story. Then Australian flooding. Now Dr. Oz on weight loss. Old news. We’re overweight as a nation. We need to eat right and excercise. Sure, right now isn’t the time to argue race. But you can’t sweep it under the rug and pretend it doesn’t exist. The ex-boyfriend of the half-sister was moving out of the apartment and said he saw Barnes on the couch at about 1:30 p.m., but when he came back to the apartment at about 5:10 p.m., Barnes was not there. The door was reportedly unlocked, and the music in the apartment was extremely loud.
As I said a little earlier I don’t honestly watch news on TV, I get mine online – but I did see this story on ABC and CNN. I agree that there are still some people such as J Kelly and Greg that are obviously still abhorrently racist. The thing is that, as a white, the only people I ever knew who thought blacks were inferior or somehow less deserving were themselves so ignorant that I never found their company worthy of the time. Honestly, the most racist people I’ve ever known were also among the dumbest.
So what I’d rather talk about is this- can we actually help her family or the search in some way? Is there something we can do for her mom? I’ve worked in schools, am expecting, and just lost my mother. I know how important our children are, how hard we work (those who care to see their children succeed) to teach them well, and how devastating it is to lose someone. I’ve not suffered the horror of losing my own child, as this is my first baby- but we lost three children at different times, at the school I worked at. I was heart broke when one of our KG boys (black- and he lit up the room, he was an amazing boy) was beaten to death by his father. I can only guess how much deeper the hurt and suffering must be for Phylicia’s mother. She was a single mom who saw to it that her daughter grew up strong, well educated, and with a good moral compass. The things she’s said since her daughter went missing make that apparent to me. She and her daughter deserve something of us; if we can give anything useful I want to know. I want to help, not waste time with idiots like Greg. Way off base with that comment…I have plenty of african friends, and met many more while i was in college, and to my knowledge, there sentiments were exactly opposite of what you describe…

I agree that the media gives less attention to missing African American girls. However, the media gives a great deal more attention to crimes involving racism when the victim is African American than when the victim is hispanic, Asian or white. So, I think it’s a specious assumption that the lack of attention to missing African American girls in media is due to racism.
Certainly race comes into play for the actors in a news product when it is decided if the product has the right scenario to be marketed (also referred to as “news-worthy”). However, I don’t think it qualifies as full-on racism (e.g. that a black girl is less valuable than a white girl) rather, there is racial subtext to the paradigms in American’s minds that make them more accepting of a story (“little white princess in peril,” or “helpless black man victimized by white mob”).
Blaming everything on racism is intellectually lazy and is growing tiresome to many in America. I suggest a more thoughtful dialogue be encouraged among African Americans lest we find ourselves mindlessly repeating a mantra of one-sided social conspiracy theories to a world that has simply moved on.

Barnes is not the only student missing like this. But the others are college students. Remember Brian Shaffer, Maura Murray, Michael Negrete, Justin Gains, and Josh Guimond. Most are athletic males and not likely abduction victims. They are also still missing.
The common factor is that they are high achievers, heavy computer users, and the disappearance happens after a period of intense study such as at midterms and finals.

This poor girls body was actually identified earlier this week…found in the MD river. This is so sad that when children go missing its almost expected for them not to be found alive. This was not a joke for someone to make money! This beautiful girl was missing and now found dead along with another body of a male (police not sure if he was connected in her death)….
