You Can Tell A Lot About A Man By A Neck Tattoo

by Herina Ayot on January 12, 2011

in Culture & Community,Features

On my way to work the other morning, the guy in front of me in the street coffee line asked to take me out. His work ID clipped to his belt said “Tim.”  The “No, but thank you” came out almost immediately, and was even easier than normal when I saw the tattoo on his neck. I’m good, I added in my own head. I don’t know what it is about a neck tattoo that turns me off, especially considering that I LOVE men with tattoos.  It almost defines the word MAN for me. Masculine. Strong. Bad Boy. All words that come to mind when I see the way the ink contrasts with his mocha skin. Sexy. And somehow it makes me feel protected when I’m laying in bed wrapped up in muscular arms decorated with art. Like he’s a gang leader and I’m his hood chick, and we hold each other down. Hard. Tattoos can have me acting a fool over a man. But the neck tattoo, not so much. On second thought, I do know what it is. The shyt is just tacky. In the two seconds it took me to consider the request from Tim, I saw the neck tattoo and concluded a few other things about him and his life.

1.He doesn’t have a job. When I say he doesn’t have a job, I don’t mean he doesn’t work. Tim obviously has a job because why else would he be up buying coffee this early and plus, he was displaying a work identification on his clothing. What I mean is, Tim doesn’t have a career and probably doesn’t do anything that I would consider appropriate for someone I want to date, marry, and/or build a family with. I could be wrong, but judging from his Dickies and Timberland boots, I’m probably right.

I don’t know many corporate companies that have a lot black men on staff, much less black men with neck tattoos. I’ve never worked with any nor seen any men in high up positions with many visible tattoos, period. Companies don’t hire them. Or could it be that the kind of men that get neck tattoos, are not the kind of men who are educated enough to even go after these jobs. Which leads me to my next conclusion…

2. He never graduated from college. Because if he did, why is he in his late twenties, still working a blue collar job that someone without a college degree could do. My parents spent too much money and I pulled too many all night study sessions during my college years to be a college graduate doing high school graduate work. I admit, it is possible that he got the neck tattoo when he was young and foolish, and has since done a complete 180 with his mental abilities, but the fact still remains, he has severely limited his options by getting his neck all inked up. College takes planning. SAT’s, essays, good grades. It doesn’t make sense that someone planning to go to college, planning a long term career, would lack planning in the area of tattoos. A real practical dreamseeker wouldn’t just “forget” how detrimental a neck tattoo would be. And the neck tattoo isn’t just foolish for men,but for women too. Rihanna is an exception. She’s a supastar. She has already established a steady flow of paper. But that chick with the nasty attitude waiting my table at IHOP the other day was probably just angry because that was the only job she could get with a tattoo the size of my fist on her neck.

3. He’s either an athlete, a rapper, or a loser. There are really only 3 things that a man with a neck tattoo can be. He could be an athlete who has made it in the pros. Million dollar contracts and stuff. For him, the neck tattoo doesn’t hurt so much but how many of us are pro athletes? He could be a rapper. You know bling blingin. New Jersey mansions. High rise Manhattan lofts. All money from album sales, but there are even fewer “successful” rappers than there are athletes. Tim wasn’t a rapper or an athlete. What else is there? What other job makes it acceptable to rock a neck tattoo? I think he worked for RDS delivery service. So here we have a guy without a college degree, who works for a delivery service, and is not very smart with life decisions. In my world, that’s the long way to spell “loser.”

I knew a guy who turned me on every time I saw him. 21 tattoos and all of them done well. His arms, his torso, his back, his shoulders. When I saw him naked, it was like making love to Van Gogh. He told me he wasn’t finished yet, but he was sure to never tattoo his face, his neck, his wrists, or his hands. “Any part of me that can’t be covered with a button down shirt is free of ink,” he told me. Masculine. Strong. Bad Boy. And Smart. I can dig it.

Right on sister, I can dig it lol!As a man with several tattoos and piercings I share your sentiments regarding my male counterparts. The shit is straight up tacky as hell lol. I used to live in Fresno, California where it is extremely conservative and racist and there was a story in the paper about an elderly White man that was a veteran that worked at a movie theater. The new owner of the theater was going to fire him because of the new policy regarding tattoos that he wore on his forearm from the military and the new company uniforms. If it is already difficult for us brothers to find employment and unfortunately become stereotyped why even bother hiring a dude that has his gang set or girlfriend tatted in a place so pronounced? During my stay in he 559, I had contemplated cutting my locks because of this and even though dreads are more mainstream now, there are some places in the U.S., that won’t even give a brother the time of day unless your are a tattoo artist or performer.Great post sugar!

Tatoos look horrible on Black people period. After a foot that green ink is indistinguishable from their skin. Look at a picture of Tyrese and see if his tats make sense. And instead of having interesting things come out of their mouths these idiots literally draw pictures on their bodies. For women the number and the placement of tatoos just indicates your predilection towards slutty behavior. I’ve done the research .

Oh you Erykah Badu fake bohemian chicks are on some slutty shit too. Just because there is patchouli oil in your ky and your dildo is made from hemp doesn’t mean your type isn’t closet freaks.

and yet my question goes unanswered…. Let me make sure i understand Predilection: A preference or special liking for something; a bias in favor of something. I can totally understand your train of thought if the female has a “tramp stamp” she likes it from behind. On the breast or thigh or other erogenous zone. However, on my foot, arm, shoulder means what? What does the number (1), and position (foot) say about my sexual preference?
All the information you gave me was based off the design I described?
btw i’m not at all certain that fragrance in KY is the safest or that dildo are able to be made from 100% hemp… it was cute “comeback” tho

Heres where I knew this article was gonna be bad.

~”Like he’s a gang leader and I’m his hood chick, and we hold each other down.” Oh lord, this site has countless articles about why black women should never look up to (& hook up with) gangsters, because they’re foolish/ uneducated AND jobless. It also ironic cus A lot thugs and their leaders have neck tattoos.

I understand your sentiment at the same time, i think you may have missed the overarching point. Yes, it is great that you have a job in this economy. I think the author’s point was that with a neck tattoo, it is going to be very difficult for him to get a job past that “blue collar job” once this economy gets out of the slump.

And let’s face it, a lot of people, both men and women, have their own perceptions of what is MAN-ly or WOMAN-ly. I think men should smell a certain way. You know that wonderful, “man” smell (lol). I don’t know what it is but I know it when I smell it :) That is one of my perceptions about what being man-ly is. I think all she is saying that when she sees a man with tattoos it makes her think of a “man”. Even if he isn’t a “thug” persay, it makes her feel like he’s a bad-boy (even if he does have a degree and a career).

Tatoos on women are a social taboo that is part of the appeal. Now in America 1 tatoo is irrelevant on a female because it is not violating societal norms. But you get into double digit numbers all over her neck , hands , upper thighs etc and this indicates a rebellious nature. Most women aren’t rebellious in only one facet of their lives so if I’m shopping I’m looking for tats. But the system works even better on Asians. They still have strong prohibitions against tats so an Asian girl with a tat is generally a freak. The science is sound.

I too love a tattooed man and that is usually one of my first questions. Recently my 52 year old brother got a neck tattoo of his wife’s name because she was feeling unloved. Shyt, she would have continued to felt unloved because I’ll be damned if I tattoo anyone’s name on my body let alone my neck.

This article came across as faaaar too judgemental/critical of Black men, in addition to college education, to me.

The American Dream is to go to college, get a white-collared job and make that bank. The American Reality is to go to college, get that blue-collared job that in the LAST generation only took a hs diploma to get. You’ve got to go get your Master’s, get that right connect/hookup to then get that bangin White-collar job that’s gonna cash you out.

And the part about a hood dude and you’re his hood chick? Cmon son. #iCant

The matter of our existence is formed in the physical.A guy with a tattoo on his neck doesn’t actually equate the wholeness of a man, but the sister who wrote this article just rendered her opinion like all of us here.In the business world regardless of street or corporate is based upon appearance period. All I know is that I gazed with joy upon the neck and frontal and back tats of a former La Raza gang member turned bio-technology engineering Intellectual Property lawyer who was the summa cum laude graduate and research scholarship recipient every year he was in Undergrad.
Is this post about body ink in general or of the stereotypes (which may have made a better article) people hold of those with body ink.

A career..? I don’t know what the author considers career and/or acceptable but you can give me a blue collar construction worker, maintenance and/or engineering technician ANY DAY!! Those dudes easily make over six figures a year while I know plenty of dudes that LOOK professional but have no job/aspirations/education to speak of.

Ok so when the authors choice of men blows up I hope she takes account for what she likes in men.

I hear nothing on character-plenty on surface bullshit. 2011, I am 35, was actually on the streets in NYC during the 90′s when it was deadly. I survived. Yet black women still has to bring in thugs?

I got two friends locked up now whining like bitches that “we do something” yea I am when they get out-dap one love good luck and good night.

When in school these two hustlers never gave their boy a dime for one book.

So if this is who some black women want cool hope you got that 10% of his $20,000 bail (thats one friends dilemma). And pay close attention that they didnt help their boy while in college. You know we all know each others families and all but that shouldnt matter in one sided affairs. (this is a huge thing ladies you can find out more about a man through his friends and not your ego as to what you WANT to see in him).

As for tats and gigs-it depends on the gig. If he works for a small contractor say a waste removal company-well his boss might have as many tats as he do.

Corp gigs-well if they arent visible no one will see so carry on. Of course the neck and hand and even low forearm are risky but given the conservative dress code you really dont see that much flesh in the boardroom.

And yes this is the first generation of college grads that arent working in their specific field for which they studied or if so are woefully underpaid and are overworked.

Reply

43 Greg Dragon January 12, 2011 at 10:57 am

One thing that I’ve found is that the women who say they want thugs don’t mean real thugs. They want the guys who play dress-up, the thugs we know that get locked up for real and do real sh-t usually have the chicks that aren’t reading or writing blogs. This is why I smile when I see the thug descriptions, that kind of dude would not survive a day in the shoes of a real thug and women can’t handle it.

lol that is very true it’s even funnier when you are in a club in Korea and Japan and you see a Nigerian trying to give a close approximation of thuging. But to your point they want real dudes because real dudes make you put heroine in your vagina and sneak pistols into nightclubs . Real dudes have you luring ball players to motel rooms for robberies. Real dudes have you stealing social security numbers and committing food stamp fraud. That dude who dropped in the second semester of his freshman year to sell weed on campus is not a thug.

But this right here is the kinda mediocrity I’d expect to see on a PERSONAL blog…not on a well-rounded site like FXP

That being said, neck tattoos are tacky…but the women that find them attractive probably aren’t the same caliber that your avg stand-up guy is seriously interested in

To each her own I guess is my initial response to this post.

All of the author’s reasons for disliking men with neck tattoos seem like gross generalizations. I would agree that a great number of men who have neck tattoos do not have corporate careers however there are probably just as many men who don’t have neck tattoos that also do not have corporate careers. In any event not having a white collar career, which could be anything from a director of mail service (mail room manager) to CFO (chief financial officer), should never be an absolute in not dating someone in my opinion. Not to mention there is a very large dollar difference between both of those “white collar” positions I listed above if the author is worried about finances (I get a hint of that from the piece). Did the author ever consider that blue collar positions include police and fire fighters who I believe are up there on the list of “respectable” men to bring home to mom.

At the end of the day someone’s preference is just that. It doesn’t have to have any basis in fact. Most people’s preference when it comes to dating rarely are backed by facts more like stereotypes and assumptions. But we also know what happens when one assumes.

There’s a lot of value in not judging a book by its cover!

56 King Curtis January 12, 2011 at 2:30 pm

“…I LOVE men with tattoos. It almost defines the word MAN for me. Masculine. Strong. Bad Boy.” Seems to me that the author has been conditioned to fall in love with the imagery of the streets, but hates the reality that comes along with imagery. The “Like he’s a gang leader and I’m his hood chick, and we hold each other down.” sentence kinda gave that up to me. Blame BET, MTV, and VH1 for that.

I agree that you won’t see too many “professional” people with face, neck, or hand tattoos in financially strong positions, but I think the real issue here is the author’s perception of men and her seemingly “class” focused brain.

I agree with the author. I suppose I’m stuck up and judgmental, too! However, to be fair, I assume foul things about men with GED’s, men who own no belts or slacks, and men who have braids. Likewise… I date a man with a GED, who owns no slacks, and has braids. What does that prove? Some people can surprise you. Give them a chance.

Where to start….

First, I want to thank the author for her post; this is an open forum for comments and for blog posts. My comments do not at all reflect the author and who she is as a person, but rather the content of this article and this article alone and I hope that I am not offending her or anyone with my comments.

That being said….

…this was one of the worst articles I’ve read on this site concerning the conversation between black men and black women in contemporary society. As other commenters have noted, I figured that this article was going downhill with a quickness.

Honestly, I’m trying to figure out can a black woman rationalize a fantasy for the embodiment of a black man attached to tattoos, and even a gang leader and wanting to be his hood chick while chastising a man for having a neck tattoo and jumping to these wild conclusion that a) he’s not career minded b) he hasn’t graduated from college and c) that he wants to be a rapper or a ghetto hoopstar, which really is more an embellishment of the premier conclusion.

At first I really thought this was an article written in sarcasm which I know can sometimes be hard to catch at times, but somehow I think the author was quite serious.

And this proves my point that I’ve been saying for some time: black women shouldn’t own the definition of what is a black man. But even when we define it for ourselves, even in superficial ways such as tattoos or clothing, black women reject it and tell us we’re not a man, we go back and cater to them and then they say we’re too soft.

Oddly enough, if this is a true approach to men attractions that this author has, I’m sure she has no problem getting a date or finding a man.

That being said, where’s Sista Toldja, I’d love to see her response to this article.

**shots fired**

Reply

60 Sister Toldja January 12, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Well, since you called me out…lol

I was lost at the title, but someone asked me to read it. I think the author makes a lot of gross generalizations, and while they are based in what many of us have seen on the streets…I think her thoughts on neck tattoos would have been better summed up with “I think they are tacky and a man with them probably isn’t the one for me.” And its her right to be turned off by them. Hell, I find them to be a turn off more often than not myself. But it’s all the other stuff she said along side that idea that was…troubling.

I thought the “gang leader/hood chick” fantasy reference was odd. It seems like a man with a neck tatt would seem somewhat likely fit that irrational, hyper-masculine Black male archetype she painted. This is kinda like saying “I like D-boys, but not the ones who wear Timbs”. She reinforces a lot of terrible ideas about what makes a man, but then throws shade at men who work blue collar jobs. That’s absurd. Not only does blue collar work fail to define a man’s character and his standing in the community…skilled laborers and their supervisors have tremendous earning potential that a LOT of us college educated and buoyed by loans folks would love to grasp.

As another commenter said, this is more suitable for a personal blog than this site.

She had to have been dead azz…otherwise there would’ve been no real reason to write it…it would’ve lacked a thesis to debate on right? The sadder reality is there are women who really do think this way…they’re just scared to say so, b/c they know they’ll be berated w/ truths that they don’t want to/aren’t ready to face

@JW I agree.

This is the exact female young Black girls/women should not look up to and follow for their own sake. On another note, it confuses me when Black women wants a thug, but he’s educated with a degree. That’s like oil and water. Make up your minds seriously, because the reality is you can’t have both, lol. It’s either one or the other. Nevertheless, I can’t judge she’s entitled to her own opinion. If that’s what she wants go get ‘em tigress. To all the young Black females, go and support the brother striving for that A, with his head in the books. Please.

I don’t know what it is but I know it when I smell it That is one of my perceptions about what being man-ly is. I think all she is saying that when she sees a man with tattoos it makes her think of a “man”. Even if he isn’t a “thug” persay, it makes her feel like he’s a bad-boy (even if he does have a degree and a career).

I am not saying I totally agree with her but I understand her sentiments as well.

Funny! My brother has tattoos ear to foot even hands. He is owns his very own tattoo shop here in cincinnati and has others that work for him. He also has TWO degrees and is established. He travels doing tatoo conventions and getting invited to work at other shops in other states. Urban ink has done two spreads on him and he also has been invited to do a reality show about tattoo artist. He is married with children and is a great man all around. So does that sound like loser? I thnk not, lol. Also ppl need to do reasearch on how tattoos / tattooing came about b4 associating it with gangs. I knw most gang members and thugs have tattoos , but research how they come about. My native polynesian and african ancestors have been doing this for evr.

Hmm…not my favorite article. But the conclusion is that neck tattoos are a turn off…to which I agree. But I’m not much of a tattoo person at all….They’re a little strange to me I have to admit. I’m more of a piercing person, I have plenty of piercings that i can get rid of once I’m sick of them when I’m older.

That being said though…the author describes this ideal man covered in tattoos (except for his neck of course) …so many tattoos that he reminds her of a gang leader, and she’s his hood chick…Yet, neck tattoos are an indication that that man didn’t go to college. So does that mean we’re looking for College graduate, CEO, tatted gang leaders? Where do they make them at?

i don’t really like them. when americans do it, it seems like they are just followers looking some attention. maybe it’s just like tagging… saying hey look at me.. I’m worthy, pay me some attention, i’m important…idk, a lot of people get them because they see celebrities get them. which follows the same sentiment. hey look at me, that celebrity has tattoos he is important, so i must be too…i rebuke the idea of females getting tattoos, especially on their neck. it’s riduculous and classes, even if it’s on a celebrity. it just leaves me thinking… what in the heck are they trying to prove???

Well most of y’all have gone hard on this article so I will refrain. I have one thing to say though. I am NOT a man but I do have a large tattoo on the back of my neck. I am most certainly employed. And if you think that the only job I can get is blue collar you obviously haven’t seen all the other tatted up people educated our nation’s youth.

Wow! FreshXpress is funny. I love them for publishing my articles but I didn’t even know this was posted until I just googled myself. I feel the need to clear the air after reading some of the comments. I’ve written two articles for Fresh Xpress under my real name. Colors of Love, and a fresh look at music producer Dillemma. Everything else, Fresh Xpress has taken from my blog Sinnamon Nights. Sinnamon is a character I created, She’s a little snobby and so I write in that voice.

A few people mentioned this article should have been written for a personal blog and it was. Fresh Xpress has the right to republish articles, I would prefer they don’t use my real name but instead use Sinnamon since my own voice and hers are not the same. But I have no control over what Fresh Xpress does. Sinnamon is meant to be a fun, light hearted dating and relationship site. So don’t take her too seriously. http://www.SinnamonNights.blogspot.com

maybe not everybody wants a corporate job we all know just because you live a richer life does not necessarily mean you live a better one, I have many neck tattoo’s and I love them all and have not had any problems getting a job, PS. I’m black and work with nothing but white people and they don’t treat me any different then anyone else, getting a neck tattoo does not mean you are dumb nor does it mean you have a low paying job, I agree with MTDRAKE maybe its something personal to them as long as they like it that’s all that matters

Lady please get over your self!! That is a reason why women like you may have your degrees and a good job but will forever be the slaves of “so called rich men with ambitions”. That guy with the tattooed neck may have well been the man that would have make any sacrifice in this world to make you happy. U dont judge a man by his tattoo or his dress code, thats straight up nonsense.. Now get up off ur stocky goody two shoes ass, and realise a tattoo does not make a man who he is, ur the one talking like u dont have much common sense.. The way ur acting like ur too good for certain mn your the kind of woman a rich white/black man without a ‘neck tattoo” will treat like shit!!!!!! Get down off ur damn high horse u stupid retard, u are no better off than that guy with that neck tattoo or no prettier than that girl at iHop with her neck.. That girl at iHop probably had a nasty attitude because her first impression of u was a stupid, stuck up, feels like she better than everyone bitch that feels everyone who have a neck tattoo will not get anywhere in life, Oh PLEASE!!!! u need to get to the nearest tattoo parlor and get ur whole face tattooed and stop pretending like ur all that!!!!!

I think its funny to judge someone by a neck tattoo. Shows you are by far a disturbed person! You spent all this time writing about how negative his life is and career is down the tubes for him. I find that funny seeing is My neck is completely sleeved and so are my arms. I own a large web firm in nv and ca area and give web consults all day long. I never get judged and if they do they lose out on the best sites out there. I never did college and I make a really good Living for me and my 3 children. I also find it sad that you could of said no not interested, but you had to write about a guy who must of thought you were beautiful and was interested in you, and you diss the hell out of him on the web. KARMA IS MY RELIGION!!! O and btw not everyone’s parents pay for college allot of people haft to make the best of it. at least he had a job.

Tattoos look awful on dark skin. You can’t see what it is and the black outline that surrounds the tat seems to be puffy. The darker the skin the more it looks like a blot. Why they waste money getting one is beyond me. This comment comes from an African American. I would never get one.

LOL to this post, looks like your living in the 90s. Look around you, this generation n even the next generation of society are getting more tattoos than any before. Soon all the corporate business men are going to be……them. You are very closed minded and ignorant to judge someone for a tattoo.

I don’t think this Herina Ayot is turned off by neck tattoos, she is turned off by the stereo type she gives guys with neck tattoos. The guy asked to take her out on a date, not marry her. Clearly she isn’t looking to ‘get to know’ someone based on who they are, but rather what they could provide for her. Tattoos are gangster? wth! She is clearly stuck in some hollywood produced fantasy of what men are and shouldn’t be so fast to categorize people based on something as superficial as a tattoo. My advice to men, steer clear of psychos like Herina, and Tim, you dodged a bullet bro! This is a wanna-be basket wife that uses her ‘goods’ as bait to success. Shame on her.

I have a degree. Own a small business. Participate within my community as a sports and musical teacher. Drive my own car. Pay my bills on time. Educate my youthful peers. And do my own laundry.

Well look at that, I also have a neck tattoo.

hmm this is kind of funny. I have a neck tattoo and #1 maybe the girl who wrote this shouldn’t read a book by its cover. I own my own company and make roughly 20k a month. I also have a girl most guys want and most women hate because they’re jealous. #2 Saying someone is broke, a loser, an athlete or a gang member because of a tattoo, regardless of where it is, is ignorance at it’s best. I have a neck tat that is a rest in peace tribute and I wanted to see it everyday I look in the mirror to remind me of my sister. And what is wrong with being an athlete or a rapper? Neck tats are a freedom thing for us. We don’t work 9-5′s, most of us have more money than the average joe, and it’s a sign that we think different than most people. Oh yea and suck my dick bitch, if you don’t like it then stop lookin’! PEACE.

But out of all of the places you would get a tattoo, WHY somewhere so pronounced? I am a woman. I have tattoos. But wow, There’s just some places you do not GET tattoos. Yes, NECKTAT, you can have all of the success in the world. I do not think that is the issue. But if you saw a woman with a face tattoo, or several facial piercings, or even a conglomeration of makeup/weave/colored contacts, what would you ASSUME about her? The article is sound in the sense that it speaks to what we all assume about people who have made some odd choices in their lives about how they present themselves.

86 NECKTAT March 9, 2012 at 3:14 pm

What would I assume about her? Or a close minded person brainwashed by how and what people are suppose to look like? And some of the most beautiful women I have ever seen have neck tats, sleeves, FACE and many other tattoos. I prefer women who don’t look like the typical woman. Think about this, what if EVERY car looked the same? Or what if you ate the same foods EVERYDAY? It would get pretty boring. I’m sure you like to wear different clothes that suit your tastes. Same thing, we just express in a different way. Does it make us bad, ignorant or a”rapper”? It’s crazy people still think this way.

I’ll tell you what you can tell about a MAN with a with a neck tattoo, I’m a whiteboy by the way, not that race should have anything to do with a tat or anything else. My tat is a bigass choker dogchain that my tatty man done one hell of a job on mind you LOL and I love it … and so do alot of women, But thats beside the point, I got it because I liked it and didn’t give a ratsass what anybody else was going to think about it . And because i’m a dog LOL

Things that you can tell about a man with a neck tat..

1. He has the BALLS to get the tat that he wants. No matter what you or anybody else thinks about it, or how you choose to judge him.

2. He probably wouldn’t date someone like you re self that gives a ratsass or is concerned how he makes a living or if he works, besides anybody with a neck can always find a way to make money because most people with neck tats have had to find a way at some point in their life to overcome one thing or another.

3.He is probably not a gold digger nor does he date gold diggers,

4. You are probably too close-minded to date him, and more that likely you aren’t his type anyway, if he is sporting a neck tat chances are he is picky about his company.
